Breast Lift

Port Moody plastic surgeon Dr. H. Ukani performs mastopexy, often called a breast lift, to give women from Langley, Surrey, Coquitlam, and Vancouver, BC, and beyond firmer, shapelier breasts. Breastfeeding, heredity, weight changes, and other factors can cause the breasts to sag or droop. On its own, a breast lift repositions a woman’s natural breast tissue to restore the breasts to a higher, more youthful-looking position. The procedure can also be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation to add both volume and lift to the breasts.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Breast lift surgery is a highly customized procedure that can be tailored to suit a variety of patients. In general, good candidates for the operation are healthy, adult women who would like to address one or more of the following concerns:

  • Breasts that are elongated or pendulous
  • Nipples that point downward or droop below the breast crease
  • Areolas that are excessively large or stretched
  • One breast that hangs lower than the other

During the consultation, Dr. Ukani takes the time to evaluate each candidate’s body and help her determine the best course of action for her anatomy, goals, and lifestyle. The decision to undergo a breast lift is highly personal, and Dr. Ukani understands that a woman’s feelings about her breasts can affect much more than her body.

Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation

While both are breast enhancement procedures, breast augmentation and breast lift surgery provide different improvements. Here is a comparison:

  • Breast augmentation adds volume to one or both breasts with silicone or saline implants. Fat transfer can provide a subtle increase. Implants do not correct moderate to significant sagging.
  • Breast lifts remove stretched, lax skin to elevate and reshape the breasts. The areolas can be reduced as well. This procedure does not increase breast size and may actually make the breasts look smaller.

Because many women, especially those who have been pregnant or who have breastfed or lost a significant amount of weight, benefit from a combination of breast lift surgery with breast augmentation.

Where Are Incisions for a Breast Lift Placed?

Dr. Ukani uses the following breast lift incision placements:

  • Periareolar incision is placed around the areola (the darker skin that surrounds the nipple) and is the most common incision he uses.
  • Vertical incision, also called a lollipop incision, encircles the areola and then runs down to the breast crease. He uses this option for breasts that require a more significant lift.

During your consultation, Dr. Ukani explains which incision he plans to use and why. He also gives you an idea of what to expect in terms of scarring.

How Is a Breast Lift Performed?

Dr. Ukani tailors each breast lift procedure to suit the unique needs of a variety of patients. He may make adjustments depending on the degree of breast sagging (ptosis), the quality of the breast skin, and other factors. Dr. Ukani keeps incisions as short and discreet as possible.

Once the incision has been made, the underlying fat and breast tissue are repositioned to a more youthful-looking shape and position. The nipple and areola are raised to point forward instead of downward, and enlarged or stretched areolas are reduced in size. Excess breast skin is also removed for a smooth, toned appearance. Internal, dissolvable sutures are added to support the breasts as they heal.

Breast Lift Recovery

Before your procedure, Dr. Ukani provides you with a detailed plan of what you can expect and how to care for yourself during the recuperation period. After breast lift surgery, recuperation is typically not excessively painful or challenging. While experiences vary, the following timeline describes a typical presurgical and recovery experience for breast lift patients:

Before Surgery

  • Arrange for a trusted adult to drive you home after surgery and help you care for yourself, your children, and your pets for the first few days after surgery.
  • Fill and pick up your prescriptions.
  • Set up a recovery space in your home with medication, pillows, phone charger, TV remote, and post-op instructions within reach.
  • Schedule about 2 weeks off from work.

Night Before Surgery

  • Follow your pre-surgery instructions, including not eating or drinking, removing jewelry, and taking off any makeup.
  • Get a good night’s sleep so you’re well-rested before surgery.

First Day

  • You will return home after surgery and will need to rest to allow the anesthesia to wear off completely.
  • Prevent blood clots by standing and walking around every few hours. While you are lying down, move your feet and legs frequently to encourage circulation.
  • Elevate your upper body by resting and sleeping in a recliner or propped up with pillows to minimize swelling and bruising.

Week 1

  • Expect to have some initial swelling and bruising.
  • Most patients easily manage discomfort with prescribed medication for the first few days.
  • Most women feel ready to return to non-strenuous work within 1 to 2 weeks; those with physically demanding jobs will likely need more time off.
  • Continue to wear the surgical bra as directed.

Week 2

  • Most patients are ready to return to non-strenuous activities.
  • Bruising and swelling fade.

Weeks 3 to 4

  • Most people are able to resume light exercise after 3 weeks. (Restrictions on lifting anything heavy remain in place.)
  • Your incisions should be healed enough for you to soak in a bathtub, go swimming, and go in the ocean.

Week 5

  • You may gradually resume more intense exercise, heavy lifting, and most regular activities, with the doctor’s approval.

Weeks 6 to 12

  • At this point, you will be able to enjoy your final results.

6 to 12 Months

  • Your scars will fade from pink to white, become thin, and flatten for about a year after surgery.

Dr. Ukani provides each patient with detailed, personalized postoperative instructions.

Breast Lift FAQ

How should I sleep after surgery?

Patients are advised to sleep on their backs and keep their breasts supported by wearing the surgical bra to promote proper healing and minimize excessive scarring.

When can I take a shower or bath after surgery?

You will be able to shower the day after surgery as long as you avoid soaking your incisions. Soaking in a bath will need to be postponed for about 3 weeks to allow the incisions to heal.

Will I need a surgical bra following surgery or can I wear any bra without an underwire?

Surgical bras are soft yet supportive, making them perfect for recovery after breast enhancement surgery. If you have a different type of bra you’d like to wear, get it cleared with Dr. Ukani to ensure your recovery goes smoothly.

When can I work out after a breast lift?

Light exercise may be picked up after 3 weeks. Strenuous activity, such as weightlifting, can be resumed after about 5 weeks.

Can I go without a bra after having a breast lift?

While you may hope to be free of bras after surgery, your breasts will be less likely to sag if you support them consistently. Going without a bra now and then is acceptable but should be reserved for special occasions.

How long do breast lift results last?

By maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding extreme weight fluctuations, breast lift patients may enjoy their beautiful results for many years.
